Asbestos Management Surveys for Churches

Sean Rooney • April 14, 2022

The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 have made it a legal requirement that all churches manage asbestos risks..

Churches have a primary duty to make a proper and sufficient assessment of whether asbestos is present or liable to be present within the premises.

This duty can usually be met by an asbestos management survey. After the risks are identified, they must be monitored and managed. A church will need an asbestos management reports in order to meet the legal requirements for managing the risks of asbestos through ecclesiastical insurance providers.

Heating is a major asbestos issue in churches. There are other aspects that also need to be considered.

For example, asbestos can be found in pre-Victorian churches. It can be in boiler installations that date back to the 1930s. Heating systems have been replaced with modern ones and the old one has been capped off. Insulation and flexible joint material have been used in heating units/motor units and bellows. Fuse boards - older electrical systems such as those found elsewhere in similar buildings. Cement roof tiles are replaced by existing roofs. Electric storage heaters were installed prior to 1974.
